How to make your spring break staycation fun and memorable

Spring break season is upon us, and while a lot of parents have already made plans for the week, others are fretting over what to do with their tots. Instead of leaving for the week, taking a staycation could be the way to go! To help you get started, we’ve put together a list of tips to make your staycation fun, engaging, and stress-free.

When you need a pediatrician in Charlottesville, give our family healthcare practice a call. Albemarle Square Family Healthcare is a whole family healthcare clinic that treats people of all ages. We can provide pediatric, geriatric, and women’s health services, as well as acute care, sports and occupational physicals, and more. Call us today to get started!

Here are some fun activities for your staycation.

Plan a Picnic

Whether you eat in your backyard or at a park, a picnic is always a great time. Create a menu of healthy foods that are age appropriate for your children to help you make. Enlist their help in assembling the food, packing it, and putting together a picnic basket. Go to your location of choice, and enjoy!

Explore Your Home Town

There are few of us who haven’t passed through our own hometowns and wished we had time to visit a museum, library, or another place of interest. Instead of going to the same places you already go, find a place you’ve always wanted to go to but never have!

Make a Scavenger Hunt

Unlike a traditional scavenger hunt, you can make a week-long hunt of 20 things to look out for and check off a list. The first person to see them all can win a prize, such as a week off of doing a chore, or a small reward. Choose a theme to your hunt—there are some excellent ideas and pre-made lists to be found online!

Start a Garden

Spring is the time of year to start getting your garden ready, and while everyone is at home, it’s the perfect time to start prepping. Spend an afternoon cleaning out the garden and prepping it for new plants to grow. Once that is done, you can start seedlings in paper cups—kids will have a blast picking out new flowers and vegetables for the garden!

Other Tips for a Stress-free Spring Break Staycation

In addition to activities, there are some other ways you can make your staycation as stress-free as possible. Here are a few we recommend.

  • Keep a routine – Even though you’re having a great time and doing new things, you should still try to keep circadian rhythms in check. Keep the same bedtimes, meal times, nap times, etc., as much as possible. You don’t want your fun this week to turn into a huge adjustment next week when their schedules are off.
  • Eat healthy meals – Yes, you’re on vacation, and probably will head to places that you wouldn’t normally go to eat. However, keeping their nutrition as healthy as possible will keep their energy levels high and avoid developing bad habits that will be hard to break afterward.
  • Don’t push too hard – Even if you’ve spent a lot of time planning the activities for the week, your kids might become tired. You can still encourage them to participate, but when they’re tired and cranky, let their energy levels guide you when to stop.
