Luck for you, in today’s blog, the healthcare professionals at Albemarle Square Family Health Center will go over a few activities you can do to help you and your family stay active during the winter. We’ll explore activities you can do by yourself, with your family, or with some dedicated friends. Either way, you’re sure to have fun while staying warm and keeping active, even when you didn’t think you could. So, without further delay, let’s get into some of the best winter activities you can do to keep yourself active.

Shovel The Snow

Let the reason you’re trapped in your house be the reason you leave it by going outside and shoveling the snow. Start out with your porch and work all the way down to the sidewalk. Every time you go to shovel more snow, be sure to get low, imitating a squat or even a lunge if you’re feeling saucy. Put as much snow on the shovel as you and the tool can lift then fling it onto your yard. Switch your stance and work both obliques when you move to throw the snow. Don’t stop until every inch of your driveway and sidewalk is cleared off. Then, when you’re done, see if your neighbor needs any help shoveling off their property. Also, don’t forget to shovel off your deck or backyard area for your pets. Make a little walkway for your dogs and cats when they go out and do their business so they don’t do it on something they shouldn’t.

Go Sleddingboy riding blue sled

A perfect snow day activity with the kids, sledding can be both fun and an exercise. Find a nice big hill to go down and pick your favorite snowspeeder. Every time you go down the hill, grab your sled and run back up to the top. A few rounds of this will get your heart beating and your legs feeling like lead. For those who are experts at running up hills, put your kids on your shoulders or back for added weight and then run back up the hill. This is a sure-fire way to keep your blood pumping and the kids happy.

Have A Snowball Fight

Is there anything more iconic during winter than a good, old-fashioned snowball fight? Gather up the family, some friends, and even the neighbors to get in on this snow battle. Set up forts, use objects like sleds as shields, and create your ammo to go to war. Keep going until there’s one person left standing, or play a custom snow version of capture the flag. Snowball fights are great ways to have fun while staying active and not even realizing it. Winner gets the first cup of hot chocolate.
